Microsoft has officially made
SharePoint 2016’s first public beta available for us to play with. We can now install SharePoint 2016 to see what this first preview is made of.
See my earlier post for more
details.
In this post you can get an
overview of what we’ll find in this new release. If you're looking for the
hardware and software requirements to get started, you can refer MSDN for
detail list.
Min Role:
You can now install just the role that you want on particular SharePoint 2016 servers. This will only install what’s required there, but even better, it'll make sure that all servers that belong to each role are compliant. You’ll also be able to convert servers to run new roles if needed.
Hybrid Features and Experiences:
Min Role:

Hybrid Features and Experiences:
The most
impressive advance in business facing functionality and features come from
cloud-powered experiences for hybrid environments. Microsoft is using cloud
innovations to solve long-standing problems with both existing on-premises and
hybrid architecture.
Hybrid feature
can be configured in Central Administration. It may require to run the hybrid
configuration wizard, which will download elements from the Office 365 to
enable and configure capabilities in the on-premises farm.
OneDrive Redirection:
OneDrive Redirection:
SharePoint 2016
beta continues to allow an organization to redirect users’ OneDrive for their
personal document libraries within their Mysite to Office 365. OneDrive redirection
was introduced in SharePoint 2013 service pack-1. The enhancement would allow
organizations to adopt OneDrive for business fully.
Sites you follow in one place:
Now Users can click on “Follow” both
On-premises and on their office 365 and see them all in one place under the “Sites”
app in the app launcher.
Hybrid Cloud Search:
The Office 365
search will take your on-premises SharePoint search index, so that it can give
you results from both for the same query.
Note: You will have to use Office 365 search for
this to work. If SharePoint 2016 on-premises users query against their
on-premises search services, then it will continue to give them only local
results.
Cloud hybrid
search provides some key benefits to customers of both SharePoint server 2013
and SharePoint server 2016 such as:
- The ability to reduce your on-premises search foot print.
- The option to crawl in-market and legacy versions of SharePoint, such as 2007, 2010 and 2013, without requiring upgrade of those versions.
- Avoiding the cost of sustaining large indexes, as it’s hosted in Office 365.
The new cloud
hybrid search solution is the first step in our new hybrid vision that allows
customers to take advantage of new innovation in Office 365.
App Launcher:
The App launcher
provides a new navigation experience where all your apps are easily available
from the top navigation bar. You can quickly launch your application, browse
sites and access your personal files.
New and Improved Controls:
SharePoint 2016
document libraries inherit the new, improved control surface for working with
files and content, simplifying the user experience for file creation, sharing
and management.
You can click a control to create new office
documents, upload files, synchronize your files for offline use and share your
files.
Simple and natural sharing:
SharePoint
Server 2016 improves the sharing experience by making it more natural for users
to share sites and files. Just click on the share button at top right corner of
every page, enter the names of people you want to share with and press “Enter”.
That’s it , done! The people you just shared with will get an email invitation
with a link to the site.
Long file support:
SharePoint
Server 2016 provides support for uploading files up to 10GB. Previous versions
of SharePoint didn’t support uploading or downloading files larger than 2047MB.
Along with this character restriction has been removed.
Removed 5,000
View Threshold:
A Document
Library can have 30,000,000 documents, that’s never been an issue. However,
many of you know that 5,000 seems to be the actual limit for many end users
that don't know they had to index their columns.
I'll spare you
the details, but the 5,000 view threshold is actually necessary, or your entire
SharePoint would be slown down. It prevents SQL to lock the entire database
really.
Instead of removing this unpopular threshold,
they automated the creation of Indexed Columns. This means that technically the
limit is still there, but you won’t have to worry about it
Durable Links:
In earlier
versions of SharePoint, if you upload a document or file into a document
library and then rename the file or move the file to some other location, the
link was broken. The durable link resolved / fixed that issue. Because all the
resources use ID based url. So when you want to share a file, it creates a link
which contains the resource id, embedded with it. So even if moving or renaming
a file, still the shared link works. The resource ID assigned to individual
documents is stored in the content DB related to the source document. While
using durable links, when a user selects link to a specific document, SharePoint
server 2016 looks up the file by the resource id and opens it in office online
server preview.
Project server Synchronization:
Project server
2016 beta runs as a service application in SharePoint server 2016 beta. The SharePoint
server 2016 beta MSI will contain the installation files for Project server
2016 beta as well. So a separate installation is no longer required as it was
in previous versions of project server. However you still need to purchase the
license for project server separately.
Open document
Format (ODF):
Th Open document
format (ODF) enable user to create new files in a document library and serve as
ODF files. So that users can edit the new file with a program they choose.
You can also
create an ODF file from any program that is compatible with ODF.
Zero Downtime
Patching:
Now this will
surely please many of you managing the SharePoint servers, the size and number
of the packages are immensely reduced. They’ve also removed the downtime
previously required to update SharePoint servers.
New Compliance
Center in SharePoint 2016:
Not only can you
leverage a lot of the compliance features in Office 365 with your On-Premises
SharePoint 2016, new sites have been introduced to help you stay in control.
The In-Place Policy Hold Center and the
Compliance Center allow you to build your own policies and apply them against
your environment. New basic policies allow you to delete data in OneDrive for
Business sites after an x amount of years for example, not unlike “Retention
Policies” if you think about it.
